DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 - Nov 2: Hotel Bougainvillea

Arrive in San Jose where you will be warmly welcomed by your chauffeur and escorted back to your hotel. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the poolside or taking a walk in the lovely gardens to recuperate from your long day of travel. This is a good place to see the White-eared Ground-sparrow, the Blue-crowned Motmot, some colorful hummingbirds, and maybe even the Prevost’s Ground-sparrow.

Day 2 - Nov 3: Laguna Lodge

Getting an early start to the day, you will be picked up from Hotel Bougainvillea in a shared shuttle transfer between 5:45am and 6:30am (exact times will be communicated to you the day before via email). The shared shuttle ride will make a stop around 8:30am for breakfast at Resturante Senderos Rio Blanco. Afterwards, you will continue on for about another 1.5 hours until reaching the canal docks. From there, you will take a scenic, shared water transportation to arrive to Laguna Lodge in time for lunch. This afternoon you have the option to join a self-guided tour of Tortuguero Town or stay on the lodge grounds relaxing by the pool or taking a stroll on the beach. Please check in with the reception desk if you would like to book a guided turtle hatching tour, early morning kayak tour, or afternoon hike.

Day 3 - Nov 4: Laguna Lodge

Today will explore the rich labyrinth of waterways which will afford excellent wildlife viewing. The area boasts 320 bird species, including Tiger Herons, Agami Herons, White-fronted Nunbird, and all six species of Kingfishers belonging to the Americas. Along with birds, we may also see sloth, caiman, iguanas, poison-dart frogs, freshwater turtles, basilisk lizards, the Honduran White tent-making bats, and three species of monkeys that frequent the banks. In the evening feel free to take a self-guided walk along the beach with a flashlight to see if you can spot baby turtles hatching (ask for more information from lodge staff).

Day 4 - Nov 5: Selva Verde Lodge

Today you will embark again on the journey through the canal system to the mainland. A shared shuttle will talk you to Resturante Senderos Rio Blanco for lunch. From there a private ground transportation will pick you up and you will travel to the tropical lowlands of Sarapiqui. Spend the afternoon exploring the wildlife-rich riparian zone along the banks of the Sarapiqui River. This rain forest region at the base of the Caribbean slope is well known for hosting the greatest diversity of tropical flora and fauna. Here the Sunbittern, Black-faced Grosbeak,an d Gray-necked Wood-Rail are a few of the inhabitants of the area. This is the most likely spot on the trip to see the Great Green Macaw, an endangered species that depends on the Dipteryx tree for feeding and nesting. This is one of the emergent trees commonly found in Sarapiqui. Also lurking in the forest are two- and three-toed sloth, 3 different species of monkeys, and peccaries.

Day 5 - Nov 6: Selva Verde Lodge

Spend the morning at La Selva Biological Station run by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), clearly a highlight of the tour. You will have a privately guided tour at La Selva from 8:00am to 11:00am. The station is among the four most famous tropical research facilities in the world. We will see an outstanding abundance of wildlife. The station is home to more than 420 bird species, more than 500 species of butterflies, 55 species of snakes, and 120 species of mammals. A vast variety of different species of trees can be seen in the arboretum. This is the most likely place to make your Tinamou dream come true. There are three species of Tinamou that inhabit La Selva. We will be looking for Rufous Motmot, Trogons, Caciques, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, and Snowy Cotinga, among many others. Animals here are not camera shy, so there will be ample photo opportunities. Peccaries (wild pig), agoutis, coatis, sloth, and monkeys frequent this area. All of which makes for unforgettable days.  In the afternoon, enjoy a guided, shared wildlife boat tour of the scenic Sarapiqui River.

Day 6 - Nov 7: Arenal Observatory Lodge

Today you will make the journey from Sarapiqui to La Fortuna/Arenal area, which offers breathtaking views of the jungle-covered Arenal Volcano. This is a birding and wildlife hotspot, and the stunning natural beauty will astound you. The extensive trails at the lodge allow for tremendous opportunities to view the Crimson-collared Tanagers, White Hawk, Brown- hooded Parrot, and the Golden-olive Woodpecker, along with an array of colorful hummingbirds, and three species of Toucans. One night, we will go owling in search of the Black-and-White Owl and Mottled Owl, in the hotel grounds. You will arrive in time for lunch at the lodge. Enjoy a stroll through the gardens before your private "cook like a local" cooking class (and dinner!) at 5:00pm.

Day 7 - Nov 8: Arenal Observatory Lodge

Today is going to be an action packed day! At 7:00am, right after breakfast, you will be picked for your shared Zipline and White Water Rafting excursion. This excursion takes about 8 hours from start to finish (please pack: secure shoes, clothes to get wet in, a change of clothes for after the tour, and an appetite for adventure). You will start with rafting and end with ziplining with your expert guide. Lunch is included in the tour and you will arrive in time for dinner and a relaxing evening at the lodge.

Day 8 - Nov 9: Arenal Observatory Lodge

After you big day yesterday, enjoy a slow morning strolling on the lodge grounds or book another tour directly with reception. After lunch today at 2:00pm you will get picked up for your shared Don Juan coffee and chocolate tour. Discover how coffee and chocolate are made from "farm to table" and savor the tasty samples.
